Who We Are



The Company was established by managing director Greg McManus (right) in 1996 as a tourism-based quality assurance consulting company.  Greg trained and worked in the hotel industry for a number of years before joining the South African Tourism Board as Hotel Inspector in 1986.  He was responsible for the maintenance and inspection of hotel standards until being appointed Director: Standards in 1992 where he established the first voluntary grading system and standard in South Africa.  He has over thirty years experience in standards development and quality management and has consulted widely on hospitality and environmental standards in Africa.

Neal Dickinson (left) joined the company in 2001 with retail and food service management experience and quickly rose to the position of Director: Operations.  He is responsible for the day-to-day operational needs of the Company and for the maintenance of standards and audit schedules.

About Heritage


The Heritage Environmental Management Company was first established in 2001 as an environmental rating initiative for the hospitality industry in South Africa.  Our first certification was awarded to the Sandton Convention Centre in 2002 to coincide with the 2002 Earth Summit which was held in Johannesburg.

Since then, the company has expanded its certification categories and product range to provide certification solutions to all facets of the service industry including hotels and accommodation; game lodges and resorts; zoos and aquaria; meetings and events; golf courses; residential estates, banking, retail businesses and business services.  Heritage is currently being applied by over 150 businesses across eight African countries and is recognised as the leading certification brand in Africa.

Our standards are based on internationally recognised sustainability and responsible business initiatives including ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and ISO 20121 and others.  Every member of the Heritage network undergoes an on-site review at least every twelve-months and is awarded one of three levels of recognition according to their performance, sustainability and responsible business practices.

At Heritage we are committed to enabling corporate sustainability and continual environmental  improvement in the services sector through the application of globally competitive management systems, procedures and operational practice.
